Crucifixion
2004, 6.5” high, Etched Emu shell highlighted with gold gouache/leaf; image depicts Crucifixion Icon in Russian style; scene includes Mary & the Apostle John weeping under the cross; title on reverse side in Old Slavonic script translates as “Crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The varying shades of green are different layers of shell which are revealed through the etching process. Beeswax is drawn on the shell as a resist to the acid (in this case, vinegar) to create the image in this process. An Emu shell’s surface is a deep forest green color with ever lighter tones of this green the deeper one etches into the shell. |

Resurrection
2004, 6.5" high, batiked and painted Rhea shell depicting the Byzantine icon of the Resurrection, the principle Christian feast. This icon - often called "The Harrowing of Hades" shows Jesus - through his death - breaking down the doors of Hades and releasing Adam & Eve as the primordial humans from the bounds of suffering & death. This image was created through a combination of wax-line drawing (batik), brush painting, and gilding. |
