egg erotica: classical: the attica series
Batiked eggs based on Attic-black (Greek, c. 500 bce) figure pottery are prime examples of my studio’s theme ancient design for a new worldview. Western civilization is rife with references tot he classical Greeks’ ideas about humanity and its relationship to all the cosmos – natural & divine. We consider our culture the offspring of these ideas whether they manifest in architecture, government, theater, literature, or philosophy.

Our 21st century understanding of these ancient ideas regarding sexuality and human relations is obscured by centuries of interpretation through religion, science, and re-presentation by the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and later art movements. Through the Attica Erotica series, I have sought to re-present these ideas as they were manifested in the pottery of the same time period in which they were discussed in the agora, temple and home. By re-interpreting this imagery on eggshells in our times, i.e. manifesting these ideas today, I hope to describe a whole worldview about human relations, sexuality, and our place in the cosmos. Through reflecting on these ideas in this series – we “moderns” can see ourselves in a new way - by showing how similar/different we are today.
