egg/art: globes
The earth is a beautiful place – filled with verdant pastures, dense forests, winding rivers, majestic mountains, haunting deserts, shimmering seas – the interplay of land and water and sky IS the fuel of artistic inspiration.  The very shapes of islands and continents convey an inner design logic that is satisfying to the eye.  As a child I used to pour over topographical maps – I still do.  This love of cartography has generated a line of work – the globe eggs.

I started painting topographical globes early in my career – as early as 1992.   To this day, I enjoy the technical challenge of painting topography on eggshells.  The color globes celebrate the interplay of land and sea - while applying color principles from Japanese block prints.  A color globe on a goose egg was given to Mikhail Gorbachev in 1995 by an international environmental organization called the Green Cross, which he helped establish.
