egg/art: mobiles
Mobiles represent my newest experimentation with eggs as a sculptural phenomenon.

I have long loved Calder’s use of wire to create whimsical creatures (as in his piece “The Circus”). While living in Washington, DC in the 80’s I used to sit under the giant mobile that would swirl over one’s head in the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art.

I endeavor to fuse this sense of delight with eggshells floating in space using the thinnest possible wire. Keeping the eggs white examines the meditative possibilities of these structures – pure white orbs defying gravity, moving slowly – calming the mind.

Using eggs that are dyed (or otherwise decorated) creates a dynamic of different colors and images relating to each other in space. The distance and relationship between each egg (or cluster of eggs) is determined by the length and structure of the wire. Combined, these elements create a kinetic sculpture, allowing the viewer to conjure something beyond the sum total of the parts.
