As an artist of Ukrainian descent, I continue to employ the ancient art of pysanky in its original intent = creating talismans (power objects for personal and communal ritual use). The “shooting cock” talisman is a prime example of this practice. These eggs are a celebration of male sexuality – each egg has an erupting penis wrapping around its elliptical surface. As a talisman – these are meant to convey the possibility for a healthy, happy sex life for its bearer.
The talismans are either based within Attic black-figure pottery imagery (a black cock on an orange background), or are a scratched and/or painted phallus on a gilded surface. These talismen are self-standing (partially filled with sand as a ballast) and are created on chicken or duck shells.
